Chronic Dog Ear Infections

Does your dog seem to have a never-ending ear infection?  It clears up after treatment, then returns shortly afterward?

Chronic ear infections are a big indicator of food allergies and intolerances in dogs.  Inhalant allergies do not normally produce ear infections.  So, you may be dealing with a food allergy and not an allergic response to something in the environment.  A food your dog is eating could be triggering the ear infections.

Does the ear have a foul smell?

When my dog develops a food-based ear infection, besides not wanting me to touch her ear,  I can also smell her a mile away.  There is a distinct yeasty smell to her ear.  My Doc has prescribed Otomax for bacterial ear infections and they have cleared within a week.  But, I also use this homemade recipe faithfully which controls the yeast infections very well.  I definitely recommend it as reasonable treatment.  For me, it has worked 100% of the time.

Cheap Dog Ear Infection Treatment for Yeast

16 oz. Rubbing Alcohol

4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder

16 Drops Gentian Violet

An empty plastic squirt bottle with long applicator snout.  I use the alcohol bottle as a storage and then use an eyedropper to administer.  A funnel works well to get the boric acid into the bottle.

Shake before using because the boric acid settles to the bottom after use.

Squirt into ear canal and massage.  Wipe excess with a tissue.  Gentian Violet is purple and WILL stain.  The dog will most likely shake his head after the squirt, so Be Prepared!

Apply two times a day for 1 to 2 weeks depending on how bad the infection is.  After that, one time per week for an additional two weeks.  Then, once a month for maintenance and yeast control.
