Ear Infection in Pets

Ear infection in pets can be quite painful as they have a buzzing sensation around their ears. The infection can range from severe to mild depending upon the kind of infection. Ear infection often occurs in pets due to parasitic organisms such as yeast and bacteria. If the infection is not treated in time it could lead to severe damage to the ear drums and might even damage the brain. The symptoms of ear infection in pets are many. Firstly, there is a foul odour in the ears which is often accompanied with a black or yellow coloured discharge. The pet often feels lethargic and the ears are often reddish in colour. A pet can often get infected from certain food substances that might contain allergens or it could be also due to some foreign substances that might have penetrated the ears. Sometimes the infection could also be due to genetic factors and hormonal imbalances in the dog. Doctors often carry out a proper examination of the ear canals to find out any abnormalities. They also carry out smear tests to find out about the nature of infection. Yeast culture is also carried out though it is a time consuming process which often takes about fourteen days .There are many reputed brands such as Iyermectin that are available at the druggists which work well for ear mites. It is advisable to clean the ear wax of the pets at least once a week with a mild ear cleaner to prevent any infection. Topical ointments which contain antibiotics are effective in treating ear infection in pets.
